Introduction. The pedagogical and digital competence of the teacher is key to guaranteeing educational quality and improving learning through the effective use of ICT. However, when technological demands exceed teaching skills, technostress can arise, which affects the well-being and quality of teaching. The objective of the study was to determine to what extent digital competence and technostress predict the pedagogical performance of Peruvian regular basic education teachers.
Method. The study adopted a quantitative, predictive, and cross-sectional approach. The participants were 602 Peruvian teachers of Regular Basic Education, who were administered measuring instruments with appropriate psychometric properties: the questionnaire on digital competence (21 items), the questionnaire on technostress (16 items), and the questionnaire on pedagogical performance (22 items). The statistical analysis included Pearson correlations and multiple linear regression.
Results: The results show that digital competence in participating teachers is at a medium-high level (M = 3.4, SD = 0.65), where 65% said they were confident when participating in digital environments. In relation to technostress, it was at a medium-high level (M = 3.7, SD = 0.72), with 62% reporting digital anxiety and fatigue. Pedagogical performance resulted in an adequate level (M = 3.5, SD = 0.60). Likewise, the correlational analysis showed a positive relationship between digital competence and pedagogical performance (r = 0.5071336, p < 0.01). However, a negative relationship was observed between technostress and pedagogical performance (r = -0.1127762, p < 0.01). In addition, the adjusted R² of the model is 0.2567, indicating that the predictor variables explain the dependent variable by 25.67%.
Discussion and conclusions. These results indicate that, although the majority of teachers present a medium-high level of digital competence, they also report a medium-high level of technostress, which is mainly associated with information overload and insufficient adequate and timely technical support. The inverse correlation between the two variables supports the need to implement strategies that, on the one hand, reinforce the digital skills of teachers and, on the other, reduce the sources of technological stress. The adoption of these actions will be essential to enhance educational quality, favoring balanced and sustainable professional development.
