The low rates of HIV testing internationally have led to calls for consideration of the cultural and structural factors that may be involved in this phenomenon. This research aimed to develop and validate an instrument to measure cultural beliefs about HIV testing among young Chileans. First, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 50 university students to identify cultural beliefs relevant to testing. Then, the Scale of Cultural Beliefs about HIV Testing (Escala de Creencias Culturales sobre el Test de VIH; ECC-Test) was developed and its psychometric properties were evaluated in a sample of 322 university students. Analyses revealed a three-factor structure with adequate internal consistency, reflecting beliefs associated with taking the test, not taking the test, and the social consequences of testing. The ECC-Test, which is easy to administer, is an instrument with demonstrated validity and reliability for investigating the relationship between cultural variables, psychological processes, and HIV testing behavior.
