A Guatemala apresenta um dos índices mais altos de migração infantil e adolescente na América Central. Em Huehuetenango, departamento fronteiriço com o México, numerosos estudantes abandonam as salas de aula em busca do “sonho americano”. Em 2018 registrou-se um recorde de mais de 23.000 estudantes que deixaram o sistema educativo para empreender a travessia migratória. O objetivo deste estudo foi identificar os fatores associados à migração transfronteiriça irregular de estudantes do Instituto Nacional de Educação Secundária da aldeia Suculque, Huehuetenango. Empregou-se o método de estudo de casos, incluindo três estudantes e o diretor, que contribuiu para a triangulação das informações. O estudo seguiu uma abordagem qualitativa com desenho descritivo, utilizando entrevistas em profundidade e observação não participante. Os resultados evidenciam três causas principais: pobreza, reunificação familiar e busca de melhores oportunidades de trabalho, considerando os Estados Unidos como principal referência para alcançar tais propósitos.
Guatemala has one of the highest rates of child and adolescent migration in Central America. In Huehuetenango, a department bordering Mexico, many students leave school in search of the “American dream.” In 2018, a record of more than 23,000 students abandoned the educational system to undertake the migration journey. The objective of this study was to identify the factors associated with irregular cross-border migration among students of the National Secondary Education Institute in the village of Suculque, Huehuetenango. A case study method was employed, including three students and the school principal, who contributed to the triangulation of information. The study followed a qualitative approach with a descriptive design, using in-depth interviews and non-participant observation. The results reveal three main causes: poverty, family reunification, and the search for better employment opportunities, with the United States considered the primary reference for achieving these goals.
