En la sociedad actual están aconteciendo una serie de cambios relativos a la estructura de la familia, a su ciclo y evolución, a la reestructuración de los roles tradicionales, a la aparición otros nuevos, y a las relaciones intergeneracionales. Estos cambios han supuesto que la figura de los abuelos recupere su importancia dentro de la familia y adquiera un notable protagonismo social.
La vejez y la longevidad pueden ser analizadas desde el prisma del potencial social que éste puede ofrecer a la sociedad. Si se entiende la familia como un espacio de interacción y de unidad entre sus miembros, la convivencia de varias generaciones se convierte de facto en generador de nuevas relaciones. Así, la presencia de personas dependientes por motivo de la vejez en la familia supone repensar las relaciones tradicionales que afectan principalmente a tres áreas: actitudinal, comportamental y emocional o afectiva. Esta nueva situación social y familiar puede resultar especialmente interesante si analizamos las relaciones que se establecen entre abuelos dependientes y nietos.

In today’s society, we find a number of changes relative to the family; to its cycle and evolution; to the restructuring of traditional roles; to the appearance of new ones, and to intergenerational relationships. These changes have meant that the figure of the grandparents has recovered its importance in the family and adopted and important social protagonism.
Age and longevity can be approached from the point of view of the social potential that can be offered to society. If we understand the family as a space for member interaction and unity, the reality of several generations living together is converted, de facto, in a generator of new relationships. In this way, the presence of dependent people because of age, means rethinking the traditional relationships which affect three areas: attitudes, behaviour and emotions. The new family and social situation can become especially interesting if we analyse the relationships between dependent grandparents and grandchildren. In this paper our aim is to describe educational benefits and the learning process found in the corresponding literature as related to the mentioned three areas
