A dichotic listening task of stepwise addition was given to 40 right-handed German-Swedish highschool students in the age range 14-16 years. The results provide evidence that the present dichotic technique was a sensitive index of different degrees of bilingualism as well as a sensitive measure of differences in the lateralization pattern of the brain. A clear REA indicating more left-hemisphere involvement was observed in the German dominant group, whereas the German- Swedish balanced group showed more bilateral involvement indicating a higher level of brain activity. No evidence was found for the age and stage hypothesis.
