La lectura, las matemáticas y las ciencias son materias importantes en la etapa escolar obligatoria. El fomento del aprendizaje en estas áreas se ha convertido en un foco educativo principal. El rendimiento temprano y el interés por la lectura podrían desempeñar un papel clave. A partir de dos conjuntos de datos facilitados por 2,722 estudiantes chinos en Grado 4 y Grado 6, este estudio investiga la relación longitudinal intradisciplinar entre el rendimiento lector y el interés por la lectura, así como sus efectos interdisciplinares en las matemáticas y las ciencias. Los resultados del modelo de ecuaciones estructurales muestran que el rendimiento lector y el interés por la lectura se refuerzan mutuamente a lo largo del tiempo. Excepto la relación entre rendimiento lector e interés por la ciencia, los dos constructos vinculados a la lectura en Grado 4 predijeron positivamente el logro y el interés en matemáticas y en ciencias en Grado 6. Los resultados subrayan la relevancia, para las escuelas primarias, de cultivar habilidades lectoras avanzadas y actitudes positivas hacia la lectura, así como del fomento del aprendizaje a largo plazo de la lectura, las matemáticas y las ciencias.
Reading, mathematics and science are important subjects in the compulsory educational stage. Promoting students’ learning in these subjects has become a focus. Early reading achievement and reading interest may play a critical role. Using two waves of data collected from 2,722 Chinese students in Grade 4 and Grade 6, the study investigated the longitudinal within-domain relationship between reading achievement and reading interest, as well as their cross-domain effects on mathematics and science. The results of the structural equation model showed that reading achievement and reading interest were mutually reinforced over time. Except for the path from reading achievement to science interest, the two reading-related constructs in Grade 4 positively predicted achievement and interest in mathematics and science in Grade 6. The findings underline the significance for primary schools to cultivate proficient reading skills and positive reading attitudes in promoting students’ long-term learning in reading, mathematics and science.
