Is guanxi belief predicted by system-justifying ideologies?: Exploring the relationship of guanxi belief with meritocratic ideology, social dominance orientation and right-wing authoritarianism

    Algunos académicos consideran que el guanxi desempeña un papel importante en las transacciones sociales en las sociedades chinas, mientras que otros lo ven como una práctica problemática asociada con la injusticia y la desigualdad. Proponemos que la creencia en el guanxi es una norma social que forma parte del sistema social en la sociedad china, y que la creencia en el guanxi como norma social está asociada a las creencias que justifican el sistema. Los estudiantes universitarios chinos completaron escalas sobre la creencia en el guanxi, la ideología meritocrática (MI), la orientación a la dominación social (ODS) y el autoritarismo de derecha (AD), y su estatus socioeconómico subjetivo. El análisis de regresión jerárquica indicó que la creencia en el guanxi se relaciona significativamente con las otras tres ideologías que justifican el sistema, apoyando la propuesta de que la creencia en el guanxi forma parte de los sistemas sociales que reciben el apoyo de personas que tienen ideologías a favour de la jerarquía.

    Some scholars view guanxi as having an important role in social transactions in Chinese societies, while others view guanxi as a problematic practice associated with unfairness and inequality. We propose that the belief in guanxi is a societal norm that is part of the social system in Chinese society, and that belief in guanxi as a social norm is associated with Chinese people’s system-justifying beliefs. Chinese university students completed scales on guanxi belief, meritocratic ideology (MI), social dominance orientation (SDO), right-wing authoritarianism (RWA) and their subjective socioeconomic status. Regression analysis indicated that guanxi belief has significant positive relationships with the other three system-justifying ideologies, supporting the proposal that guanxi belief is part of the societal systems supported by people who hold hierarchy-enhancing ideologies.
