Na presente investigación de tipo cuantitativo, realizouse un estudo non experimental e correlacional; mediuse a obesidade infantil e a autoestima, en 30 nenos obesos e 30 non obesos. O deseño da investigación foi transeccional descritivo, cunha mostraxe non probabilística, con suxeitos voluntarios aos que lles foi aplicada unha Ficha de identificación, o Inventario de Autoestima de Coopersmith – N, unha Entrevista e medidas antropométricas para determinar o IMC. Encontrouse que estatisticamente existe unha relación lineal entre a obesidade e a autoestima de forma significativa. Os datos amosan que a obesidade explica un 30.9% da autoestima e polo tanto, que un 69.1% da autoestima se encontra explicada por outros factores (situacións e sentimentos derivados da obesidade), así mesmo os nenos obesos teñen menor nivel de autoestima que os nenos non obesos. Conclúese que a obesidade infantil ten repercusións psicolóxicas no neno obeso afectando á súa autoestima, á súa saúde mental e por suposto, á súa saúde física. Ademais a autoestima vese afectada polo tipo de obesidade.
Childhood obesity may have detrimental consequences for childhood self-esteem, the prevalence and magnitude of this problem is controversial. In addition, the social and emotional effects of decreased selfesteem in obese children haven´t been very well understood. In the present research of self-esteem and obesity a descriptively, transactional and correlational study was realized. The childhood obesity and self-esteem were measured by the Card of identification, the Inventory of Coopersmith's Self-esteem- N, an interview and corporal measures to determine the MCI. The observation was made on a group of 30 voluntary children whom suffer of overweight and 30 healthy children. It was found that there is a significant linear statistical relation between obesity and self-esteem. On quantitative analysis data was displayed that obesity variable explained a 30.9% of self-esteem variable. Although, 69.1% of self-esteem variable was explained for another variables such as feelings and contextual situations which coming from obesity. It was realized that children suffering obesity have lower levels of self-esteem than those in control group of healthy children. Conclusion: childhood obesity has psychological repercussions affecting self-esteem, mental and, certainly, physical health. It is important to keep up studies in this matter on Mexican children population.
