O texto visa a investigar a constituição de noções de saúde, vida e morte por meio das práticas nas Unidades de Tratamento Intensivo, a partir da presença de um psicólogo. Como fundamentação teórica para reflexão, foram utilizadas referências da Antropologia, História e Psicanálise. A partir das observações e das experiências dos médicos, psicólogos e pacientes, verificou-se uma série de significações e saberes articulados na constituição das práticas para se manterem vivos os pacientes nas UTIs. As situações limite nessas unidades imprimem uma marca em quem ali passa, percebendo-se uma subjetividade vivida pelos indivíduos em suas experiências particulares.
In this work the notions of health, life and death were investigated through the practices of Intensive Care Units (ICUs). As a theoretical basis, references from Anthropology, History and Psychoanalysis were used. Based on the observations and the experiences of the medical doctors, psychologists and patients, it was noted that a series of understandings and interpretations are employed in forming the practices of maintaining patients alive in the ICU. The extreme situations experienced in these centres mark those who pass through them, and one notes a subjectivity in each ones personal experience.
