En toda investigación se considera que el respeto a las personas debe ser irrestricto, es decir, que se ha de valorar que, en principio, todos los individuos deben ser tratados como agentes autónomos. Cuando alguien presenta una incapacidad y por ello una autonomía disminuida, tiene derecho a protección, a que se evalúe su posibilidad de decidir.
El consentimiento informado es un derecho exigible y una clara manifestación de la autonomía para tomar decisiones de parte del sujeto de investigación o su familia/tutores en caso de no ser capaz. Toda vez que la investigación comprenda como sujeto de estudio al hombre o mujer, deberá estar éticamente regulada como cualquier tipo de investigación, ya sea biomédica, epidemiológica o de ciencias sociales
