The present study analyzes the life quality of the elderly people living in long-term care institutions for the elderly (LTCIE) public and private, in the interior of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. This is a quantitative research, performed among 15 participants that used the data collecting application method whoqol-bref, an instrument of the World Health Organization (WHO) that asses the quality of life. The results are analyzed as of four domains: the environment, social relations, psychological and physical conditions. The average of the pointed scores in the four domains refers to the indicator of quality of life. It is possible to conclude that the elderly people living in public institutions are 64,10% satisfied regarding the quality of life, being the psychological factor the one that obtained the best grade and physical condition, the worst grade. As to the elderly living in private institutions the satisfaction rate is of 65,38%, being the environment the factor that received the best grade in satisfaction and social relations, the worst.
