The present study is the first phase of a larger study aimed at the process of acculturation followed by Puerto Rican adolescents in the United States. One of the variables selected was value orientation. The initial phase of the study consisted of the translation and preliminary validation of the valure orientation scale (VOS) developed by Deabler (1976) and McBrearty and Deabler (1977). This instrument was based on the theoretical constructs formulated by Kluckhohn (1961). The translated version of the VOS was administered to 222 Puerto Rican college students. Reability estimate for the VOS battery was .93, while for the individual rational scales it ranged from .45 to .76. Results of factor analysis were inconclusive for most of the VOS scales. Results of the canonical correlations performed with a sample of 90 adolescents from San Juan and Philadelphia, indicated a relation ship between the VOS and the California Psychological Inventory (CPI).
