El estrago materno es una problemática estructural que presenta una tenacidad especial en la relación madre-hija. Para explicar este fenómeno, Freud investiga en la intensa ambivalencia propia de la relación preedípica con la madre, mientras que Lacan equipara el deseo materno a la boca de un cocodrilo presto a devorar al niño, de no ser por la intervención paterna. El problema clínico alude a la búsqueda en la madre de un significante ausente en la estructura, el de lo femenino, allí donde el padre se revela insuficiente.
Pero la insuficiencia del padre no es la excepción sino la regla que hace síntoma.

To explain this phenomenon, Freud investigated the intense ambivalence typical in the pre-Oedipal relationship with the mother, while Lacan compared maternal desire to an open crocodile�s mouth, ready to devour her child if it weren�t for paternal intervention.
This clinical problem alludes to the search, in the mother, for a signifier that is absent in the structure�the feminine�there where the father shows himself to be insufficient. But the father�s insufficiency is not the exception, but rather the rule that makes a symptom.
