Aunque se han incrementado los estudios sobre la vejez en los últimos años, prácticamente no existen investigaciones sobre los procesos de envejecimiento en las mujeres.
Al llegar a la tercera edad se ven sometidas a una doble discriminación debida a los prejuicios relativos a su sexo y a su edad. Hemos observado en la práctica clínica que muchas de ellas al perder su rol de cuidadoras de sus hijos y maridos dicen tener la sensación de �vacío� y �desgana� para realizar sus actividades diarias.
En este estudio hemos evaluado en 41 mujeres de entre 58 y 87 años si esta pérdida del �ser necesaria� se correspondía con una pérdida en la autoestima (evaluada mediante el Test de Rosenberg).
El resultado obtenido ha sido contrario a nuestra hipótesis: el grupo de mujeres mayores que vivían solas han obtenido una puntuación en autoestima por encima de las que convivían con su familia pudiendo concluir por tanto que las mujeres mayores que se quedan solas, en su mayoría, logran adaptarse positivamente.
Although studies about elder people have increased in number during the last few years, researching has not focused on the aging processes over women.
When they come to an elder age, they suffer from a doublé discrimination due to the prejudices attached to their gender and age. During the clinical practice. it has been observed that the great part of them express a sense of emptiness and reluctance to overcome their daily activities as a consequence of losing their roles as caregivers of both their children and their husbands.
In this study 41 women with ages between 58 and 87 years old have been evaluates to research if this �necessary lost of the role� was in correspondence with a lost in the self-esteem (evaluated via the Rosenberg Test).
The obtained result has demonstrated to be contrary to the main hypothesis : the group of elder women living on their own has obtained high self-esteem marks above those living with their families, thus it can be concluded that elder women who are on their own can, on a great number, adapt to the situation in a positive way.
