A « category » is a cognitive entity associated with a number of mechanisms, processes, types of computation and actions called « categorization ». Every research domain in psychology uses this concept, which is studied using various tasks as investigation tools. This paper presents a critical description of these tasks and points out how this concept is used in the different fields of psychology. The aim is to provide a comparative description, which is as complete as possible, of the use of what appears to be one of the fundamental concepts in psychology.
