En 1981 se promulgó la ley de divorcio, facilitando un cauce legal a la ruptura de las parejas que no deseaban mantener su convivencia. Veinte años más tarde se aprecia la necesidad de aportar nuevas soluciones que permitan mantener los vínculos y las relaciones paterno-filiales después de esa ruptura, priorizando siempre el interés del menor. Así surge un nuevo recurso social - Punto de Encuentro Familiar - destinado a las familias que, después de un proceso de separación, no llevan a cabo el régimen de visitas establecido por el Juez, y para aquellos casos en que la relación paterno-filial presenta dificultades o puede suponer riesgo para el menor y el progenitor más vulnerable.
In 1981, the "Divorce law" was declared in Spain, allowing couples who no longer wished to go on living together to legalise their separation. Twenty years later, the need for new solutions to maintain the parent- child relationship after the break-up is acknowledged, specifically taking into account the children’s interest. Thus, a new social resource emerges – Family Meeting-Point – targeting families that, after divorce, are not following the "visiting rules" prescribed by the Judge, and families in which the parent-child relationship presents difficulties or some risk either for the children or for the more vulnerable parent.
