Two experiments were carried out in order to assess physiological correlates of social anxiety while the subjects were interviewed. In the first experiment, 28 women were assigned either to a socially anxious (SA) group or to a non-socially anxious (NSA) group according to their scores on the Social Avoidance and Distress scale. Subjects were interviewed by a male experimenter while their electrodermal and cardiovascular activity were recorded. Subjects filled in the Spielberger's State and Trait Anxiety Inventory and a scale which assessing the experienced anxiety. There were differences in electrodermal activity data between both groups). SA women showed higher electrodermal activity. Other 28 women participated in the second experiment with the same procedure as in the first one, with the exception that the interviewer was a female experimenter. Electrodermal activity was higher in NAS women. This discrepancy between results of both experiments is discussed in terms of the characteristics of the experimental setting and the gender of the interviewer in evaluative situations.
