The growth of video gaming in recent years has attracted increasing interest from scientific psychology. Among the most popular games is League of Legends, the most-played esport worldwide, which presents specific challenges such as tilt. The aim of this study was to examine the predictive role of gaming motivations and mental toughness on tilt. A sample of 203 amateur players from Buenos Aires, Argentina (85% male; M = 23 years, SD = 3.68) participated in the study. Participants completed a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Mental Toughness Inventory (MTI), a tilt scale, and a gaming motivations questionnaire. The results showed that competition motivation was the strongest positive predictor of tilt, whereas mental toughness acted as a negative predictor. Implications for the esports industry and directions for future research are discussed.
