This text examines the evolution of the Ego in Freud's psychoanalytic theory, tracing its development from his early writings to The Ego and the id. It articulates how Freud’s notion of the ego involved from a perceptual system oriented toward adaptation to the environment into a psychic instance structured through identifications and relational bonds –elements central to the constitution of the subject. Clinically, this conceptualization enables the interpretation of certain symptoms as manifestations of an alienated or fragmented ego and illustrates how therapeutic work can facilitate the emergence of the authentic ego, as demonstrates in the case of Maria.
