Affective interactions are fundamental in the practice of parenting. It is through these interactions that the newborn gains access to intersubjectivity, which serves as the foundation for communication and the development of an intrapsychic world. The mother becomes the primary emotional and social reference for the infant. Prematurity represents a significant challenge for both the baby and the parental function. The newborn is in a state of physical vulnerability, facing the challenge of having to mature outside the maternal womb. The bond with the parents will be crucial for the psychological, physical, and social development of the infant, as well as for supporting a parental function that may be weakened by the premature birth. In some cases, parenthood through IVF or through egg or sperm donation may add an additional layer of complexity, where the process of identification with the baby may prove more difficult.
