In this work, based on an investigation into the history of medicine and psychiatry in particular, it’s proposed that the human mind, although having its substrate in the human brain, must be studied as a distinct entity from the strictly biological functioning of the brain. From this perspective, Freud’s contribution is decisive. Consequently, it’s stated that if the foundation of science is the search for the causes of phenomena, human psychology, both normal and pathological, must be investigated according to its own rules, methods, and forms of investigation.
