This text takes as its main reference my clinical work –and what I have observed in it – over the past few decades. In accordance with the title, I propose the existence in every psychic subject, four defences that organize the psyche of the newborn during early and early childhood. Along with the three well-known ones—repression, foreclosure, disavowal—I postulate the existence of a fourth: splitt-projection. In the second part of this article, I describe its mode of operation and the need for a specific clinical approach to the returns of the splitt projected and the formation of symptoms it generates. I also include a figurative representation of the psyche and describe its characteristics.
