This research analyzes the influence of cooperative learning on the self-esteem of students with special educational needs. It highlights the relevance of this methodology for the students’ holistic development, as well as the potential of cooperative learning for inclusive educational projects. A descriptive qualitative methodology was used, with an interpretive case study design. The results show that cooperative learning fosters the development of self-concept and self-esteem through interaction, mutual support, active participation, and positive interdependence within the cooperative group. The discussion and conclusions demonstrate that cooperative learning acts as a catalyst for self-concept and self-esteem in students with special educational needs by replacing hierarchical competition with positive interdependence and psychological security. Through the role of the “shoulder buddy” and the assignment of roles, inclusive scaffolding is generated, transforming and increasing the student’s self-esteem through mutual support and group validation, although it presents limitations in cases of severe communication deficits.
