Two silences orbit around the work of Víctor Erice: the silence of the absence of symbolic words and melancholie silence. The former articulates his characters and the concepts of the primordial scene, the Name of the Father, latter manifests his cinematic forms. Based on the concepts of the primordial scene, the Name of the Father, symbolic substitution and melancholy, a study has been carried aout on the way in which the two silences interact with each other. All of this, together with a comprension between traditional melancholic pictorial symbolism and the work of Víctor Erice, leads to the conclusion that the directo´s works contain not only two silences, but also two types of melancholy, one privileged and the other pathological.
