La reseña presenta el libro Phrenitis and the Pathology of the Mind in Western Medical Thought (Fifth Century BCE to Twentieth Century CE), de Chiara Thumiger, que propone una “arqueología” histórica de la noción de phrenitis como categoría médico-cultural. El análisis recorre su continuidad, transformaciones y dispersión en constelaciones modernas de conceptos patológicos, psiquiátricos y de uso común, poniendo el foco en la tensión entre vocabularios heredados y reconfiguraciones de los marcos etiológicos, los regímenes de prueba clínica y los lenguajes de la mente. Se destaca la doble condición del concepto (peso nosológico y plasticidad cultural) y la perspectiva estratigráfica que distingue registros técnicos y legos, evitando tanto la idea de continuidad “pura” como la de invención total por época. La reseña subraya además el aporte del estudio filológico del campo semántico de phrenes y la utilidad del caso para pensar, en larga duración, las fronteras cuerpo–mente, la construcción histórica de entidades clínicas y las disputas de autoridad por el nombrar en el campo científico.
This review presents Chiara Thumiger's book, Phrenitis and the Pathology of the Mind in Western Medical Thought (Fifth Century BCE to Twentieth Century CE), which proposes a historical “archaeology” of the notion of phrenitis as a medico-cultural category. The analysis traces its continuity, transformations, and dispersal across modern constellations of pathological, psychiatric, and everyday concepts, focusing on the tension between inherited vocabularies and reconfigurations of etiological frameworks, clinical testing regimes, and the languages of the mind. The review highlights the concept's dual nature (nosological weight and cultural plasticity) and the stratigraphic perspective that distinguishes between technical and lay registers, avoiding both the idea of “pure” continuity and that of total invention by era. Furthermore, the review underscores the contribution of the philological study of the semantic field of phrenes and the case's usefulness for long-term reflection on mind-body boundaries, the historical construction of clinical entities, and the disputes over authority in naming within the scientific field.
