Psychotherapy, without ceasing to be a clinical health activity, also admits a cultural anthropological perspective as a social activity and institution. Such an anthropological perspective is particularly relevant in relation to the current rise of psychotherapy. After all, this unprecedented growth responds less to the existence of effective therapies than to cultural reasons of our time. Nor is this success necessarily good news, either for people or for psychotherapy itself. The article analyzes the rise of psychotherapy as a cultural phenomenon. In this regard, media factors (television shows, films) are highlighted, as they both reflect an already ongoing therapy culture and further propel it. Thus, the “therapeutic style” comes to constitute a hegemonic cultural form for understanding the self and personal problems, through which individuals learn to narrate their experiences using an emotional grammar centered on trauma. In this context, psychotherapy runs the risk of becoming, above all, a narcissistic dispensary of validation and empathy. The article examines how we have arrived at this point and what can be done about it
