This article explores the debate surrounding the conceptual definition of an expert psychotherapist through a narrative literature review. It begins by presenting key perspectives on psychotherapeutic expertise, emphasizing the theoretical and methodological challenges that prevent consensus. The discussion is then broadened by introducing three paradigms of expertise from other disciplines: social construction, progressive skill development, and peak performance. In light of the diverse approaches and methods, the article argues for moving beyond the pursuit of a single definition of psychotherapeutic expertise. Instead, it advocates for fostering dialogue to bridge differing perspectives. As a final contribution, the "Layered Expertise Model" is introduced, offering a comprehensive framework to delineate the various dimensions of expertise and promote more integrative research efforts.
