The purpose of this study is to empirically contrast the model of updating and maintenance self-esteem (Duro, 2021b; 2023). With a medium-sized sample (N = 53), the following hypotheses were assessed: whether there is an association between neighboring components of the model and whether each component can be predicted from their respective antecedents. The CAMA (Self-Esteem Update and Maintenance Questionnaire) was used as a measurement instrument, which consists of 37 items, distributed in 8 scales. Its reliability according to Cronbach was α = .92, showing concurrent validity with both the RSCQ self-concept questionnaire, rxy = .84 (p < .000) and the SSES self-esteem scale, rxy = .78 (p < .000). The results support both hypotheses: moderate or large correlations were obtained between adjacent components of the model, and the average variance explained by the antecedents of each component is 67%. Together, the results provide evidence in favor of two main postulates of the model: (i) self-esteem is updated in individual cycles of self-esteem and is maintained over time through the interconnection of such cycles; and (ii) self-esteem is a relational construct between two representations of the self, the model-self and the perceived-self.
