En el presente trabajo se revisan las cuestiones conceptuales y metodológicas que en la actualidad más preocupan a los neuropsicólogos del envejecimiento humano en edades avanzadas. Se aborda, en una primera parte, el problema de la diferenciación entre vejez normal y patológica, con especial referencia a la hipótesis del declive diferencial hemisférico y al patrón clásico del envejecimiento respecto al deterioro intelectual. Se destaca la preferencia de los autores por el declive de capacidades específicas, siendo los déficits lingüísticos los que mayor atención han recibido. La neuropsicología de la vejez patológica se aborda en una segunda parte, al caracterizar las demencias en general y la del tipo Alzheimer en particular, sobre todo el progresivo deterioro que estos enfermos muestran en su lenguaje a medida que avanza la enfermedad. Las palabras finales están dedicadas a la intervención rehabilitadora que la neuropsicología del envejecimiento sugiere a los especialistas.
This work reviews the conceptual and methodological questions, which worry to neuropsycologists of human aging nowadays. The first part considers the problem of differentiation between normal and pathological old age, with a especial reference to the differential hemispheric decline hypothesis, and the clasic pattern of aging in relation with the intellectual impairment. The autors' preference by the decline of specific skills is pointed, being the linguistic deficits the ones that have attained more attention. The neuropsychology of pathological aging is considered in the second part of this article characterizing dementias in general and Alzheimer's type in particular and especially, the progressive impairment that these patients show in their language as the illness goes up. The final words are dedicated to the rehabilitation processes that the neuropsychology of aging suggest to the specialists.
