En esta investigación, presentamos los resultados de dos estudios que analizan cómo los principales grupos de refugiados en Turquía, es decir, sirios, afganos y ucranianos, están representados en las redes sociales. En el Estudio 1, realizamos un análisis de sentimiento para explorar cómo estos tres grupos son retratados en las redes sociales utilizando el modelo de sentimiento turco basado en BERT.
Los resultados revelaron que los afganos fueron el blanco del sentimiento negativo más destacado, seguidos por los sirios, mientras que las publicaciones sobre los ucranianos exhibieron el sentimiento positivo más alto. En segundo lugar, para obtener una visión más matizada de la representación diferencial de los grupos de refugiados, realizamos un análisis de contenido temático en un subconjunto extraído aleatoriamente de 300 publicaciones de los conjuntos de datos utilizados en el Estudio 1. La representación general de los refugiados era negativa y estaba alineada con la teoría de la amenaza integrada. Además, los estereotipos negativos, las amenazas realistas, simbólicas y demográficas y la ansiedad intergrupal se referían casi exclusivamente a los sirios y a los afganos, con la excepción de los estereotipos negativos sobre las mujeres ucranianas. Por el contrario, los estereotipos positivos se referían predominantemente a los refugiados ucranianos. Además, los refugiados afganos fueron presentados como más amenazantes que los sirios.
In this research, we present findings from two studies analysing how the major refugee groups in Türkiye, i.e., Syrians, Afghans and Ukrainians, are represented on social media. In Study 1, we performed a sentiment analysis to explore how three groups are portrayed on social media using the BERT-based Turkish Sentiment Model. The results revealed that Afghans were the targets of the most prominent negative sentiment, followed by Syrians, whereas the posts about Ukrainians exhibited the highest positive sentiment. Secondly, to get a more nuanced view of the differential representation of refugee groups, we conducted a thematic content analysis on a randomly drawn subset of 300 posts from the datasets used in Study 1. The overall representation of refugees was negative and aligned with the Integrated Threat Theory. Moreover, negative stereotypes, realistic, symbolic and demographic threats, and intergroup anxiety were almost exclusively about Syrians and Afghans, except for negative stereotypes about Ukrainian women. In contrast, the positive stereotypes were predominantly about Ukrainian refugees. Also, Afghan refugees were represented as more threatening than Syrians.
