A profundidade do lençol freático é uma medida simples, direta e de baixo custo de ser extraída em campo, consistindo na medida mais superficial da água livre subterrânea. A disponibilidade de água no lençol freático afeta vários grupos de organismos, influenciando sua distribuição. Em algumas áreas sujeitas a secas periódicas, a disponibilidade de água no lençol vai influenciar diretamente a sobrevivência e permanência de várias espécies em determinados locais. Para inferir esta medida, um método bastante utilizado é a confecção de piezômetros, que consistem de canos de PVC instalados em campo, os quais podem permanecer nos locais de estudo por anos sem necessitar de substituição. As medidas da profundidade do lençol são feitas mensalmente com uma trena modificada e o resultado é anotado em uma planilha. Esta variável pode ser correlacionada com todo tipo de dados ecológicos.
Groundwater depth is an easy, direct measure that can be done with a low cost in the field, and consists of accessing the underground superficial water. The water availability in the soils affects a myriad of organisms, influencing its distribution. In some areas that are subjected to periodic floods, the groundwater depth affects directly the survival of some species. To measure this variable, we can utilize piezometers, which consist of PVC pipes installed in the field that can remain at the sampling site for years without needing to be substituted. The groundwater-depth mesurements can be done monthly using a modified tape measureme and the result is registered in a spread sheet. This variable can be correlated many other ecological variables.
