  Las necesidades que presentan los enfermos mentales constituyen una realidad compleja, que está resultando ser una variable clave en la planificación de los servicios de cuidados de salud mental. El CAN (Camberwell Assessment of Need) es un instrumento para la evaluación global de la necesidad. Se ha pensado para evaluar las necesidades de las personas con enfermedades mentales severas. Funciona como un filtro para detectar y marcar áreas que pueden requerir posteriores evaluaciones más concretas.

  Comprende 22 áreas de necesidad, clínicas y sociales, valoradas tanto por el profesional como por el usuario del servicio. Por cada necesidad identificada se registra el grado de ayuda recibida de amigos, familiares y servicios públicos, así como el tipo de ayuda requerido de estos servicios. Diversos investigadores coinciden en que el CAN es un instrumento válido y fiable.

  El CAN ha sido desarrollado por PRiSM, un equipo de investigación del Instituto de Psiquiatría de Londres y el Maudsley Hospital. La traducción y adaptación española corre a cargo del Equipo de Investigación Granada-Sur, en coordinación con el PRiSM.

  The needs that mentally ill patients show constitute a complex reality, that is turning out to be a variable key in the planning for mental health care services. The CAN (Camberwell Assessment of Need) is a instrument for the global evaluation of the need. It has been designed to evaluate the needs of persons with severe mental diseases. It operates as a screening to detect and identify áreas that can requiere more concrete subsequent evaluations.

  The CAN includes 22 areas of need, clinic and social, evaluated by the professional as well as by the user of the service. For each identified need, the degree of help received from friends, family members and public services is recorded, as well as the type of help required of these services. Different researchers think that the CAN is a valid and reliable instrument.

  The CAN has been developed by the PRiSM, a research team of the Institute of Psychiatry and the Maudsley Hospital. The translation and Spanish adjustement has been undertaken by the Mental Health Research team of Granada University, in coordination with the PRiSM.
