Abstract It is difficult to deny the close association between the death drive and the repetition compulsion. However, this does not seem to apply to the accidental nature linked to these concepts, as presented in Freud’s Beyond the Pleasure Principle. This text aims to recover the importance of this accidental nature in addressing the death drive. Yet, due to the vagueness with which the dimension of accident is treated in the essay, I explore it through the concept of contingency. Thus, I suggest that the concept of the death drive should be considered in its relation to both contingency and repetition.
Resumo Dificilmente se pode negar a íntima associação entre pulsão de morte e compulsão à repetição. Entretanto, isso não ocorre com um caráter acidental vinculado a tais conceitos, presente na argumentação de Freud em Além do princípio de prazer. Proponho neste artigo, resgatar a importância do caráter acidental para abordar a pulsão de morte. Porém, devido à vagueza com que a dimensão do acidente é tratada no ensaio freudiano, exploro-a por meio do conceito de contingência. Assim, sugiro que o conceito de pulsão de morte deve ser pensado na sua relação entre contingência e repetição.
