This is a psychoanalytic essay of a historical, clinical and epistemological nature, which engages with literary theory to interrogate the short story Magnetism by the french writer Guy de Maupassant. It also includes some notes on the two versions of The Horla. The focus of the analysis is on references to magnetism and its related phenomena: mesmerism, hypnosis and suggestion. It is emphasized that magnetism is treated in Maupassant's fiction as a phenomenon situated on the fringe of reason, on the threshold between superstitious belief in the supernatural and scientific explanation. The characters involved in the investigation of these phenomena quoted on stories are presented and situated in relation to the freudian path of investigation. It is argued that this is based on the scientific appreciation of the phenomena mentioned, taking the word, sexuality and intersubjective relations as the concrete foundation of the energy that Mesmer, in the form of a pseudoscientific conception, had described as animal magnetism. The papper then problematizes how the psychoanalytic approach to suggestion culminates in the formulation of the concept of transference, highlighting the ethical, clinical and political implications of its management.
Trata-se de um ensaio psicanalítico, de caráter histórico, clínico e epistemológico, que dialoga com a teoria literária para interrogar o conto do escritor francês Guy de Maupassant, Magnetismo. Acrescenta-se ainda alguns apontamentos sobre as duas versões de O Horla. O foco da análise recai nas referências ao magnetismo e aos fenômenos que lhe são corelatos: o mesmerismo, a hipnose e a sugestão. Pontua-se que na ficção de Maupassant o magnetismo é apresentado como um fenômeno situado na franja da razão, no limiar entre a crença supersticiosa no sobrenatural e a explicação científica. Os envolvidos na investigação dos fenômenos citados nos contos são então situados em relação ao percurso de investigação freudiano. Sustenta-se que o projeto clínico freudiano se assenta na apreciação científica dos fenômenos relacionados ao magnetismo, tomando a palavra, a sexualidade e as relações intersubjetivas como fundamento concreto das manifestações psíquicas que Mesmer descreveu como resultado da ação de um fluído ou energia magnética. Problematiza-se em seguida como essa abordagem psicanalítica do problema culmina na formulação do conceito de transferência, destacando daí as implicações éticas, clínicas e políticas de seu manejo.
